Dear Ogata 'Ohana,
I am so sorry for your loss, a bright star who has moved from Earth to heaven. Please accept my sincere sympathy. When I first started teaching at Maui Waena in the 1990's, I had the great fortune to be on the 7th grade team with Linda. Her gentle spirit and dedication to the teaching profession greatly impressed me. She designed her lessons with creativity and professionalism, holding all students to high standards. She was endlessly patient with everyone and always took the time to help me and anyone else who needed assistance, even until the last minute of the last day of the school year. She was instrumental in inspiring me in my teaching career. I will always remember her smile and her intelligence. I know she fought the good fight until the end. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Dudley, Michael, and Diana, during this time of mourning.

Mrs. Ogata, a.k.a. "Auntie Leenda", will always hold a very special place in my heart. She was my earth science teacher in 7th grade at Maui Waena. I had always loved science, but she was the first teacher to truly inspire me to question everything, to explore -- and to not be afraid of what I might find.

More than that, she was my friend as I went through the tough transition from a small private elementary school to the much larger public intermediate school. I could always go to her classroom to talk about anything.

Thank you, Auntie Leenda, for your love, passion for science, genuine care and concern for your students, and always-present smile -- all contagious!

Mrs. Ogata... wow I have many fond memories
of her! She was my 7th grade science teacher @
Lihikai Elementary, she was always generous,
and took her time with her students and made
sure they understood the lesson at hand. I
would always go to her for help even though it
was another subject, and she would help me
out. Even after I started attending High-school I
would visit her often at Maui Waena. She
definitely made an impact in my life and my
outlook on education and for that I am grateful.
I am sending my sincerest condolences to her
family and loved ones in this time of sorrow.

Dear Dudley,

John will be trying to get over to Maui this week, and if he gets on he will try and attend Linda's service,representing both of us. We both cannot come, as one of us needs to stay on the mainland to take care of our three grandchildren.

I hope you received our card and hope you know I will be thinking and praying for you and your family as you celebrate Linda's life.
