Charles "Chunga" Kaleoaloha Kahaleauki Jr.

It’s with great sadness the Kahaleauki Ohana announces the passing of Charles “Chunga” Kaleoaloha Kahaleauki Jr. on Aug. 29, 2020 at home in Kula surrounded by his loved ones. Chunga was born to Charles Kaleoaloha Kahaleauki Sr. and Cecilia Kikia Poepoe Kahaleauki on Sept. 14, 1940 at Hana Hospital. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Jane Kahaleauki Gomes. They were married for 48 years before her passing in 2012; his sister, Melva Poouahi and his brother Gilbert “Fello” Kahaleauki. He is survived by his brother Wendell Wong (Bonnie Wong); sister, Geranium Kuhaulua; sons, Harry Kahaleauki (Sonya Madriaga) and Francis “Franny Boy” Poouahi Jr. (Sierra Gabrels); granddaughters Letitia Kahaleauki-Souza (Chad Purdy) and Ellen Kahaleauki; grandson Lehi Kahaleauki and great grandchildren, Jahzaiah, Ciana, Justice and Colten Souza-Purdy. Chunga retired from Kaupo Ranch after 45 years. In 1957, Chunga started his own ranch and named it “Kaleo X5 Ranch”. He also started “Charlie’s Pack Trip” taking tourist to the crater by horseback through the Kaupo Gap in 1974. In his free time Chunga also served as President of the Paniolo O‘Kaup¯o Rodeo Club and served as a member and caretaker of Huialoha Church. Chunga was also inducted into the Paniolo Hall of Fame in 2015 and grand marshall in the 4th of July Makawao Parade in 2015.
