Saramento “Sam” Book, 86, of Waiehu, Maui passed away peacefully with his ‘ohana at his side on February 18, 2021. He was born on February 14, 1935 in Pauwela, Maui to Simplicio Book and Tecla Achey (both predeceased). He is survived by his lovely wife, Hannah Book; daughters, Roxanne Murayama, Rochelle (Earl) Inouye, Rosalyn (Brian) Garcia, and Raynette (Aaron) Mar; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; siblings, Angie (Tiny/d) Olinares(d), Irene Leinani (Sam/d) Kane, Espididado “Speedy” (Herminia/d) Book(d), Domingo (Juanita/d) Oliveros, Sr.(d), Josephine (Benny/d) Oliveros-Kai(d), Barbara Jane (John) Ward, Beverly “Dolly” (Melvin) Tate, Patricia “Pecia” (Frank) Meyer(d), Pedro (Geraldine) Oliveros; and a plethora of nieces and nephews. Sam was a pivotal member and leader in his chosen career, carpentry. He managed construction crews at numerous sites statewide, to include the renowned St. Anthony Church in Wailuku, Maui. As an instructor at Maui Community College, his carpentry students excelled and succeeded in their careers. Sam was happy to help family and friends with the building of their dream homes, completing his ‘ohana’s dream home before retiring from a successful career. He was an avid gardener, propagating unique and stunning florals, as well as trees with succulent fruits. A valued member of the Carpenter’s Hale Kiawe Fishing Club, he was also the Head Coach of the Maui Sons Basketball Team, who claimed championship titles at the Maui Fil-Am Basketball Tournament on Maui and in the Philippines. A respected sports enthusiast, Sam was the League Director and umpire for the Maui Construction Softball League for many years. Head Coach of the Hawaiian Sons, a championship baseball team, he mentored dozens of young adults to be industrious and outstanding men. Visitation at Nakamura Mortuary is March 19, 2021, 5pm-7pm. Seating is reserved. Walk-through visits are welcomed for attendees without a reserved seat. Aloha attire requested. Mass only is at St. Anthony Church, March 20, 2021, 10am-11am; seats are limited, pre-registration required, contact Sam’s ‘ohana by March 15 for reservations. Burial will be at a later date. Due to COVID-19, masks are required, and social distancing must be applied. The Book ‘Ohana extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr Kevin Kato, Hospice Maui: Janell, Nalani, Napua, Asa, Barbara and Joanne, and to the Bayada Home Care Team: Chris, John, Dawn, Virgie and Nichole, for their support and partnership in ensuring Sam’s comfort at home.
