William Durney Tavares, 97, of Kuau, Maui, passed away on May 2, 2019 at Maui Memorial Hospital, Wailuku. He was born on November 25, 1921, in Wailuku, Maui. He was the son of Antone Ferreira Tavares and Mathilda Silva Tavares. Visitation will be held from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Saturday June 15, 2019, at Holy Rosary Church in Paia. Eulogies will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by Mass at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m., at Maui Memorial Park Cemetery in Wailuku. Aloha attire is requested. William was a husband, father, grandfather, friend and educator. He was a school principal at Keokea, Kealahou, and Makawao Elementary schools. He was also deeply involved in service to his church and community. He is survived by his children, Susan Clare (Martin) Tavares-Kenney, James William (Helen Kiyomi) Tavares, Mary Elizabeth (John Jr.) Costales, Paul Anthony Tavares; grandchildren, Brian Reid, Naomi Bishop, Emery Tavares, Tasha Tavares, Melissa Tavares, Christopher Tavares, Taylor Tavares, Carlyn Costales, Cheré Costales, Coleson Costales, Danielle Tavares, Dasya Tavares, Devyn Tavares; and great grandchildren, Jaedys Delgado, Jayden Reid, Everett Reid, Tanea Tavares, Kaylee Tavares, Wailana Tavares, Kaleouwaloikapono Makuakane, Izeiah Tavares, Izaac Tavares, Jace Kerr, Hazel Lopes Tavares, Everly Tavares and Tahlia Tavares. He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Martha Fernandez Tavares, his son, Mark Thomas (Helen Leilani Tavares), his brother Carl Hubert Tavares, ten half siblings and his grandchildren, Sabrina and Christine Reid.
