Akio Hanano's Obituary
Akio Hanano, 84, of Kula passed away peacefully on May 25, 2019. He was born on September 19, 1934, in Hawi, Kohala to Kiemon and Nami Hanano. Following his graduation from Kohala High School in 1953, Akio served in the US Army just as the Korean Conflict ended. Upon his discharge, he attended UH Manoa where he obtained his Bachelor of Education Degree and his Fifth Year Teaching Diploma and New York University earning a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration. 30 years with the DOE, he served as teacher, vice principal, principal and educational specialist. He retired in 1994.
Akio loved to garden, fish, follow UH sports and serve his community. He belonged to the Haleakala Lions Club, served as the cub and scout master for Troop 14 of Kula, was a member of the Valley Isle Fellowship Church and was an active participant at Paia Mantokuji Mission. Most of his activities were curtailed by the onset of the Alzheimer’s disease.
Akio is survived by his loving family: his wife Kay, sons Scott, Peter (Trudy), Jon and his granddaughter Cassidy. Akio is also survived by nephews Allen Hanano, Jeffrey Hanano and Gerald Oshiro and leaves behind Katrina, his beloved 14 year old cat. Youngest of 8 children, he was predeceased by brothers Minoru, Tsutomu, Charles, Seiichi, George and sisters Lucille Jackson and Doris Oshiro.
A funeral service was previously held. A private interment at the Makawao Veterans Cemetery will be held at a later date. In lieu of koden, contributions in Akio’s memory, may be made to Paia Mantokuji Mission’s Erosion Project or to Alzheimer’s Association, Aloha Chapter.
Although he is missed, we’re happy that he is at home with his Lord.
