Al (Alexander) Nakatani
June 25, 1936 - June 14, 2023
Al peacefully joined his three sons Glen, Greg and Guy on June 14, 2023, at home under the
compassionate care of Hospice Maui with his loving wife Jane by his side. Born in Hilo Hawaii,
he was the son of the late Harriet and Takeo Kawakami and brother of the late Francis Soares.
Al is survived by his wife of 62 years Jane (Shimoda), hanai sons Richard Carr, Paul Tonnessen
and loving granddaughter Kyrie Agdinaoay. He is also survived by sister and brother in laws, the
late Walter (Nancy) Shimoda, Lois (Walter) Uehira, Ruth (Charles) Oshiro, Charlotte (the late
Ray) Tomooka, Naomi (Stephen) Kemble, and the late Michael and Jerry Shimoda and by many
more dear relatives and friends.
Al, along with his wife Jane co-founded “Honor Thy Children” a non-profit they established to
continue to carry their late son Guy’s mission and message of the importance of love and
acceptance for all. Al's advocacy work with Honor Thy Children has been recognized worldwide.
Al served honorably in the U.S. Army, on the board of Maui AIDS Foundation and the advisory
board for University of Hawaii School of Social Work.
In Lieu of koden and flowers the family has asked that if you desire to do so a donation can be
made in his memory to Honor Thy Children, 22 Pu`uaina Place, Kahului, HI 96732 or Hospice
Maui, 400 Mahalani Street, Wailuku, HI 96793.
A private celebration of life will be held.
