Alvin Tsuneo Nakamura's Obituary
Alvin Tsuneo Nakamura, 86 years old, passed away on January 14, 2026 on Maui. He was born in Lahaina and lived in Wailuku. Upon retirement, he was a resident of Las Vegas, Nevada for 25 years. His parents were Albert Tsuneyasu and Hanayo Kadotani Nakamura. He was predeceased by his brothers Roy Mitsuo Nakamura and Carl Masao Nakamura.
Alvin provided unconditional support and shared lots of wisdom and wit with his wife, Charlotte, and children Andrew (Patrise), Wade (Dulcianne), and Audrey. “Dadisms” (Quotes by Dad) will always be remembered. He was surrounded by “respect” from his “Ohana” including grandchildren-Cade, Jacianne, Colt, Ayden, and Tanner, brothers and sisters Carol (Ed-deceased) Inaba and Ann (Stanley) Nagamatsu, nieces, nephews, cousins and their families, relatives, and many friends.
Alvin started his education at the Kahului Union Church Preschool followed by Kahului Elementary School-kindergarten to eighth grade. He was a boarder at Lahainaluna High School and graduated with the Class of 1957. After attending the University of Hawaii-Manoa, Alvin continued his studies and graduated from the College of Mortuary Science in San Francisco.
Alvin T. Nakamura returned to Maui in 1963 to join his dad as a mortician/funeral director. Nakamura Mortuary, Inc. was sold in 1998. During this period of time, Alvin served as the Third-Generation Owner and General Manager-Nakamura Mortuary, Inc., General Manager-Maui Memorial Park, Inc., and General Manager-Maui Funeral Plan, Inc. He was also president of the Hawaii Funeral Directors Association and the Hawaii Allied Memorial Council.
Alvin was compassionate and considerate, as he provided quality service for families who were experiencing a loss of a loved one. As an administrator, he was capable, effective, and committed to continue the Nakamura Legacy of “caring for others.”
Alvin was the Maui Jaycees Chapter President in 1968-69. He was one of a five-man Hawaii Jaycee delegation to attend a workshop in Okinawa which included commission meetings to exchange and share information on economic affairs, community development, education, and youth activities. They also toured industrial and cultural facilities in Okinawa. The U.S. Army, Pacific supported the workshop in coordination with the U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyus.
Alvin was an “avid” golfer with two “holes in one” (par 3 just before the Maui Country Club Member/Guest Tournament in 1979 and later, at a golf course in Kauai). He enjoyed his “buddies” at the Maui Country Club while serving as a membership chair and president-elect.
He looked forward to “talking story” with “coffee club” members (local businessmen and colleagues) at Maui Palms, Kress Store, Hazel’s, McDonald’s-Wailuku, and the Tasty Crust Restaurant.
Alvin believed in the importance of “community.” He provided timely and generous contributions to sustain and strengthen “Maui No Ka Oi.” In lieu of koden/flowers, the request by the family is to select a community organization and donate a contribution in memory of Alvin T. Nakamura to continue his legacy.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2026 at Nakamura Mortuary. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. followed by a tribute to honor memories and moments shared with Alvin. “Remember the Best Times, the Laughter, and the Song.”
