Amy Kaleihoopio Chang Tam's Obituary
Amy Kaleihoopio Chang Tam, 93, of Kahului, died peacefully in her sleep, on January 24, 2013.A funeral mass will be held for her at Good Shepherd Church, in Wailuku, Maui, on Thursday, January 31, 2013, with visitation beginning at 5:30pm, and services at 7:00pm. She will be laid to rest at Maui Memorial Park on Friday, February 1, 2013, at 10:30am.Amy was born in Macau, China, on December 28, 1919. She attended McKinley High School, and Mun Lun School, in Honolulu, HI. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from Illinois State Normal University, and her Master’s Degree in Hawaiian Studies from the University of Hawaii. She started her teaching career on Molokai, later tenuring at Baldwin High School as an English instructor, and Yearbook advisor.Amy was instrumental in moving Maui Technical School in the direction of becoming a fully accredited community college. She created and directed the Hawaiian Studies Program. In her design of Maui Community College, she had the vision and dedication to make the program a cornerstone of Maui Community College.Amy is predeceased by her husband, retired MPD Inspector, Edward K. Tam, and is survived by her sons John E. (Maysie) Tam, and James K. Tam; daughter Brenda R. Tam; sister Jocelyn (Byron) Chung, 6 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.Amy was a wife, mother, composer, visionary, and avid golfer. She changed the face of education on Maui, and will be remembered for her tenacity, her charm, and her warm spirit of aloha.
