Barrie was born November 18, 1945 in Vancouver, Canada as the first and very welcome child of Ross and Leah Stewart. The family moved to Hayward, California when he was eleven years old. He graduated from Hayward High School in 1964. The family moved to Santa Cruz, California in 1969.
In 1975 Barrie moved to San Francisco, California. Barrie’s initial work included the business department of Garden Sullivan Hospital and CFO at Our Lady of Guadalupe Health Center. In 1986 he established his own company Sure Care Systems dealing with managed healthcare software. In 1993 he began working in the Office of the Mayor of San Francisco as a financial specialist and then Finance Director of the San Francisco Housing Authority.
In 2000 Barrie moved to Hawaii. He initially lived in Paia, Maui. He later relocated to Honolulu, Oahu employed as Chief Financial Officer for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA). While working for OHA he gained insight in the history of Hawaii and culture of the peoples of the Polynesian Islands. As a result, he felt much sympathy for the injustices brought about by the migrant missionaries, the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom, and 1893 arrest of Queen Liliuokalani.
Barrie returned to Maui in 2017 for retirement living at Kalama Heights in Kihei and gained many new friends. He especially enjoyed dining with Elizabeth Ayson, and Dr. Richard Natzke and his wife Ingrid.
Barrie was known for his sharp intellect, spirituality, and sense of humor. He enjoyed words, wines, and reading.
Special appreciation is extended to Manny Arriaga, Kalama Heights, General Manager, Dr. Zev Tovian, and nurse Jennifer, Maui Memorial Medical Center, for the care and support given to Barrie.
