Bernice Kuemanu Higa-Wirtl's Obituary
Bernice Kuemanu Higa-Wirtl, 81, of Wailuku, Maui passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family and
Hospice Maui on November 05, 2019. She was born to William Ulumaheihei Purdy and Ella Haiaulu Kapaku on
September 24, 1938.
Visitation will be held at Ka’ahumanu Church on Saturday, January 11, 2020 from 9:00am to 11:00am; with service
over urn to begin at 11:00am. Interment of urn will be held on Monday, January 13, 2020 at 11:00am at Maui
Veteran’s Cemetery in Makawao.
Bernice is survived by husband, Karl Wirtl; brother, Robert (Jojo) Purdy Sr.; children, Sons: Wayne (Debi) Higa,
Jason Higa; Daughters: Kathryn Moniz, Maureen (Fran) Higa, JoAnne (Tony) Talo, Martina Wirtl. 13 grandchildren
and 26 greatgrandchildren.
Bernice was predeceased by 11 brothers & sisters, her 1st husband Tokumasa Higa and daughter Judy Higa.
Bernice was born in Pu‘unene, grew up in Hamakuapoko and Ulupalakua. Attended Maui High and Baldwin High
School graduating from Maui High. She loved family and she loved her pets. She also leaves her much loved
puppies too many to name, Ulu the cat and Mo the Tortoise.
