Calvin Hiroshi Shibuya's Obituary
Calvin Hiroshi Shibuya, 80, of Makawao, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2024 at Islands
Hospice. He was born on August 15, 1943 in Pu’unene, Maui to Hideo and Michiko Shibuya.
Calvin graduated from Baldwin High School. He earned an Aeronautical Engineering degree
from the University of Illinois-Champaign-Urbana and an MBA from the University of Northern
Colorado. After college, he followed his childhood dream and became a commissioned Air
Force Officer. As a pilot, Lt. Col. Shibuya flew cargo planes and the RF4A. He served in the
Vietnam War and traveled throughout the United States, Asia, and Europe during his 24 years
of service.
Upon retiring, Calvin returned to Maui and began his second career as a baker and general
manager of Komoda Store & Bakery. He quickly learned the tricks of the trade and enjoyed
seeing the business succeed. Despite his health issues, Calvin continued to contribute to the
bakery and didn’t mind the long work hours. He was also a member of the Makawao Community
Association.
Calvin found joy in many things including running, spending time with his grandsons and
shopping for a bargain. He supported his favorite baseball team the Cleveland Guardians
(Indians) and had a love of music. He maintained a large collection of vinyls, CDs and sound
systems.
Calvin is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty; daughters, Michele, Aiko, and Tricia (Micah)
Kagimoto; grandsons, Rylan, Ryken, Colt, and Mason. His siblings; Carol (Brian) Nitta, Glenn
Lois (Mike) Ito and sister-in-law Hiroko. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins
and friends.
Calvin was predeceased by his parents, brother, LeRoy and his cat, Tono.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 at Nakamura Mortuary.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 am and the service will begin at 11:00 am. Burial will be held at
a later date. The family requests no koden; Donations can be made in his memory to: Maui
Humane Society, Kula Shingon Mission, Lahaina Shingon Mission, or Maui Strong Fund.
