Carole Toy's Obituary
Carole Hironaka Toy was born in Paia, Maui on February 23, 1943, to Sam and Chikae
Hironaka. Adorable and gregarious, her fun-loving spirit was apparent from an early
age.
A graduate of Kaunoa and Baldwin High Schools, Carole enjoyed get-togethers and
reunions with her classmates throughout her life. After high school, she left Maui to
pursue studies in Elementary Education, Music, and French, at the University of Iowa.
A proud Hawkeye alumnus, and ardent football fan, she never missed their televised
games.
Carole was a third grade teacher at King Kamehameha III school and Kahului School.
She served as a music teacher for the elementary schools on Maui, and privately taught
piano lessons. Along with her husband, Robert Toy, she owned and managed Roland’s
Shoes for over forty years.
Always happiest surrounded by those she loved, Carole was a devoted wife and
mother. She enjoyed many fun occasions with friends and family. An avid philatelist,
her many friends, in many places, added to her ever-growing stamp collection. She
enjoyed passing the time by knitting, especially dishcloths, to give to those friends and
family, often forgetting to keep any for herself. Carole enjoyed traveling, and spent
much time at her beloved home in Oregon, with her “second family” of friends nearby.
She also enjoyed going to movies, watching Korean dramas, and singing Karaoke.
Carole was predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert Toy. She is survived by her
loving and grateful children, Robyn (Steven) Webb and Warren (Jennifer) Toy; her
brother Paul (Gayle) Hironaka; and her Shih Tzu dog Suzy. A celebration of life will be
held on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at Iao Congregational Church. Visitation begins at
3 pm, with the service to start at 4 pm. Burial services will be held on Friday, November
3, 2023, 10:30 am, at Maui Memorial Park.
