I first met Darrell across a fencing strip 50 years ago and he has been a dear friend, an inspiration and a class act. He will be greatly missed.

Milton and I are so sorry to hear of Darrell’s passing. We met the Orwigs when Stephan was a preschooler at Ala Lani Preschool, where I was director/teacher. We took many excursions back then, and two memorable ones were made possible by Darrell. One was Kaluanui, where we took all 28 preschoolers, trooped up and down stairs, and got to see the art studios in the restoration in progress. Another was going on the Coast Guard cutter based at Ma‘alaea Harbor. Amazing experiences for the keiki and the adults!
Last time we saw Darrell and Mary was at Pukalani Country Club. As they were leaving, Darrell gave me three little foil animals (photo in the photo gallery) that he had crafted right then. Incredible little creations, they have their own little shelf. Each about 1 ½ inch by 2 inches, perfectly proportioned and balanced. They are treasured pieces of art.
We were at a party some time before where Darrell was telling about his horseback camping trips in New Mexico. He was already affected by Parkinson’s, but that sure didn’t stop him!
What a great person. We were blessed to have known and been touched by him for all these years. Our deepest sympathies and prayers and with you, Mary, Stephan, Graeme, and all of Darrell’s family.

Aloha Mary and family, my deepest regret for the lost of Darrell a fellow Veteran, Artist, Friend, and most important your life Partner. I still hold in me great moments of the gathering of the infamous "Poi Dogs" at your house. The fellowship, think tank, food, and most important the spirit of "Aloha". Maui has lost a friend, but he has continued his legacy as an artist that allows the ART to continue into the unborn future artist.
Mahalo Darrell,
A hui ho (until the next time), Phil Sabado
Dear Mary & Steveo,
Darrell was my first Maui art teacher at Wailea and from there I was set on the right track as an artist on Maui. We remained friends for 45 years and I have so many fun memories of him. Once he climbed way up the giant Norfolk Pine at the Hui, and another time he led us onto the Hui roof to gaze at the stars. He always had stars in his eyes and he will be sorely missed. Love & hugs, Cynthia
