Doris Sumire Yoichisako Hotta's Obituary
Doris Sumire Yoichisako Hotta, 97,
Doris Hotta was born at her family home in Sasaki Camp on Oahu Avenue in Honolulu, She was the third of six brothers and sisters born to Masaichi and Rin Tanasaki Yoichisako originally from Hiroshima, Japan.
She was educated at Waikiki Elementary School and Washington Intermediate School. She also attended the Makiki Jodo Mission Girls School to study Japanese during the 1930’s.
She began working at odd jobs like the Kress Store on Fort Street and the Hawaiian Pine Cannery.
Her mother bought her a White Sewing machine, and with that purchase came sewing lessons, a degree in dress making, and a lifetime of projects that lasted until the very last week of her life.
She met her husband, Ted Gunji Hotta, at Honolulu Young’s Library, where he was working as a truck driver.
She was an enterprising business woman and co-owner of Ted’s Men’s Wear and ted’s Maui Store, as well as a successful wholesale sales representative of state, national, and international companies.
Her passions were for sewing, crafts, reading, word games, crocheting, cooking, and baking.
Visitation will be on Tue. July 2, 2013, 4:00pm, at Wailuku Hongwanji Missing, with services at 5:00pm.
Doris is survived by her children, Carole (Bob) Mizomi, Earle (Carol) Hotta, and Sandra (Victor) Tengan. She was grandmother to Todd and Eric Mizomi, Robert and Natalie Hotta, and Keoni and Kimberly Tengan.
