Dorothy Bell's Obituary
Dorothy Jane Tom Bell, 89, of Waikapu, Maui passed peacefully on May 18, 2024, at Maui
Memorial Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Wailuku on October
1, 1934.
Known affectionately as “Bam,” she and her beloved late husband Howard could always be
found in attendance supporting their grandchildren at their various sporting and school events.
Dorothy also loved being outside in her yard, tending to her plants, especially her orchids.
Dorothy retired from the County of Maui as Secretary to Mayor Hannibal Tavares at the end of
his term in December 1990. From there she worked as an Executive Secretary at the Grand
Wailea Resort. Previous to the Mayor’s office she served as secretary to 3 Maui Police
Department police chiefs.
An incredibly loving and wise matriarch, she lived her life generously and always did what was
right. Her family is so fortunate to have had the most wonderful role model.
Dorothy is survived by her children Zina (Gerald) Matsui, Randy (Laura) Bell, and Dana (Ryan)
Kokubun, 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Services will be held on Friday, June 14, 2024, at Nakamura Mortuary in Wailuku at 9:00 a.m.
Inurnment to follow at 12:30 p.m. at Maui Memorial Park, Wailuku.
