Dear Eunice, Lois and Sheri,
Grace and I just read last Sunday about your Dad's passing. It was about couples years ago he called me on visiting Molokai wanting to relive memories. However, he did not call me back. I took both your Dad and Richard Sakamoto, then principal of Molokai High and later McKinley High School fishing in my boat along Molokai's south shores.
I will always stay overnight at your home during some principals' meetings. Your Mom and Dad were always gracious. I think Sheri deserves my gratitude because I slept in her bedroom and she had to double-up with someone else.
I will always cherish memories of eating rice for breakfast which I never did and riding the family's Bronco (I had 4-wheel jeeps at home). The view of upcountry Maui from your home first thing in the morning just made the day for me. And the gravel based driveway was so "country". My affinity for Pukalani lies in my Father's roots in Hailemaile where and when daily life was rough. He ran away from home and hopped a barge to Honolulu when he was only seventeen.
I enjoyed your family dynamics with three girls. Since we did not have children the experiences were pleasant and educational. Thank you.
Finally, we leave with Molokai's characteristic phrases of "take care" yes "Aloha" and should you receive compliments - a humble "no mention" and sign-off sign of exaggerated forms of shaka.
With a Warm Molokai Aloha,
Ed & Grace Kashiwamura
