Fortunata Bayudan Bumanglag's Obituary
Fortunata "Natang" Bumanglag was born on October 21, 1923, in San
Nicolas,Ilocos Norte, Philippines. She was the beloved wifeof the late
Noberto“Berto” Bumanglag†.
Fortunata was preceded in death by her dear siblings: Ambrocio Damo Gilia†,
Elias Damo Bayudan†, and Filomena Bayudan†. She is survived by her
cherished sister, Benita Alvarado.
In the Philippines, Nana Natang was a skilled craftswoman, creatingceramic
pots ("banga") and woven fabric ("inabel"). She was also a entrepreneur, selling
produce such as tarong, utong, balatong, and sitaw.
In 1984, Nana Natang and Ama Bertoimmigrated to San Franciscoto help
their son, Victor, in raising his children—Mariane, Vanessa, and Mark—
and starting his business. Later in the 1990s, they moved to Maui, where they
spent the remainderof their lives, nurturing a familyrooted in hard work and
resilience.
Theylived in theold Lahaina Farms plantation homes, where Nana Natang
worked at Gerard’s Restaurant as a dishwasher until her retirement. She then
took on the full-time responsibilityof being a stay-at-homegrandmother to her
grandchildren—Krystille, Krizhna, and Karisa—in their Lahaina home.
While at home, she enjoyed tendingto hergarden, caringfor her paria, tarong,
and roses. A faithful woman, she found peace in her church community and
was devoted to daily prayer.
In 2017, Nana Natang moved to Hale Makua in Kahului, where she was
surrounded bylove and care from her nurses, including her niece, Helen
Bumanglag, and other dedicated caregivers like Angie,Jen, and Marissa.
