Francis Napua Poouahi's Obituary
Francis Napua Poouahi also known as “Uncle Frank”, 77, of Kula, died January 23,2016, at his residence. Services will be held on Friday February 19, 2016. Public visitation to start at 5:30PM with Nakamura Mortuary assisting with arrangements. A lucheon to follow on Saturday February 20, 2016 at 2:00PM at Hale Nanea in Kahului.
Mr. Poouahi was born on June 19, 1938, in Kaupo, HI. He was the son of Joseph and Caroline Poouahi. He was predeceased by his wife Melva Poouahi married for 54 years before her passing in 2009 at the age of 62 and his beloved daughter Doris. He is survived by his son Francis (Sierra Gabriels) Poouahi Jr, and daughter Evangeline (Larry Sr.) “Tita” Fong. Along with his 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. “Uncle Frank” was born in Kaupo and attended Kaupo school untill the 8th grade. He moved to Lahaina and started work at Libby Pineapple Company. He soon missed his Paniolo way of life and moved back to Kaupo when his dreams came true, "Uncle Frank" was hired by Kaupo Ranch on April 1st, 1959 to follow his fathers footsteps. After 43 years of service to the Kaupo Ranch he retired in 2002. On December 22, 1962 he married the love of his life Melva Kahaleauki. Together they had three children Evangeline, Francis Jr., and Doris.He did a little bit of everything at the Ranch from water man to clearing hundreds of acres of land with a D-6 dozer and even the knowledge and history of the Ranch. In 2011 the House of Representatives of the State of Hawaii recognized Frank Napua Poouahi as a "Maui Paniolo Living Treasure" thus Frank's lifelong and exemplary contribution to the Paniolo way of life also, in 2013 he was inducted into the "Paniolo Hall of Fame." He will be remembered for his humble manor, integrity, and tenacity.
