Gaylord Carl Kubota's Obituary
Our beloved Gaylord Carl Kubota, 79, passed away peacefully at home in Kahului on November 14, 2022. He was born in Wailuku on May 29, 1943 to the late Tokuji and Laura Kubota.
Gaylord attended Kaunoa School and graduated from Baldwin High School. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of California, Berkeley and a Master of Arts degree in Asian History from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
He met his wife of forty-nine years, Young-Shin, when he was stationed in South Korea while serving in the U.S. Army. After returning to Hawaii, he helped to preserve precious pieces of history through his work at Bishop Museum, and later as the founding director of the Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum in Puunene, Maui.
Gaylord was a devoted Christian and an active member of Kahului Union Church for more than three decades, where he served as a deacon, a member of the home visitation team, and enjoyed participating in the Monday Night Men’s Bible Study.
He is survived by his wife, Young-Shin; daughter, Lisa (Dave); two grandchildren, Mia and David; and sister, Patrice.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 10th at Kahului Union Church. Visitation starts at 10:00 a.m. and Celebration of Life begins at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Maui Memorial Park.
