Glenn Haruo Otani's Obituary
It is with great sadness that the Otani ‘ohana announces the passing of Glenn H. Otani on July 30, 2020. Glenn was born to Yukio and Violet Otani on August 8, 1951 on Maui. Early on in life Glenn followed his father’s
footsteps and was a Kula farmer for many years until he began his 24 year career with the State of Hawaii CTAHR. Many will remember the long days farming with Glenn and his family planting and harvesting vegetables in Kula. While farming he also volunteered his time to coach his sons Russell
and Kraig throughout their childhood in baseball and soccer. Glenn’s love for youth sports inspired him to become one of the founders of the Upcountry Little League and paved the way for youth sports in the
Upcountry area. Even after his sons had grown past Little League he continued as an officer for the Upcountry Little League. Glenn also found ways to be active in the Maui baseball community by organizing his own score keeping group to help at MIL and AJA games and tournaments. His
goal was to help perpetuate youth sports by teaching others so they could also find joy in volunteering for the kids and the community. He was a scorekeeper for life and enjoyed talking story with all the families and friends that surrounded the game. In the early 80’s Glenn founded the Kula Farmers men’s softball team where they played on the weekends at Wells Park and took to the annual Hana Hawaiians Softball tournament every Labor Day weekend for many, many years. He and his family looked forward to that time of the year with everyone involved within the Hana and softball
community. Glenn is predeceased by his wife June and mother Violet. He
is survived by his children Dawn (Alfredo) Hernandez, Russell, Kraig (Heather); grandchildren Brendan, Jaeden, Kaitlyn, Kaia and Kensie; father Yukio; sisters Sharon (Roy) Tanaka, Diane (Harvey) Owara; and furpup Crystal. Glenn will be cremated and kept at Makawao Hongwanji until services are deemed safe and we can come together to celebrate his life. Condolences can be sent to the Otani Family at P.O. Box 328 Kula, HI 96790.
