Glenn Yoshino's Obituary
Glenn Yoshino passed away on August 8, 2023, a victim of the Lahaina wildfire.
Born Glenn Yoshio Yoshino on December 13, 1947, Glenn grew up in Puukolii, and was the older of two brothers raised by a single mother. He and his younger brother Wayne both worked from a young age to help support the family. The brothers also played in Little League, and practiced judo and aikido at Lahaina Dojo where their Uncle Tsugi was a sensei. In high school, Glenn attended Grace Baptist Church and was part of the Lahainaluna Class of 1965.
After further study on Oahu, Glenn moved back to Maui and worked at least two full-time jobs for most of his adult life. He worked the desks at several hotels from Kaanapali to Kahana. And he helped run the popular late night eatery House of Saimin near Nagasako General Store. There he’d often be seen cooking, making wun tun in the back, taking orders, and talking story with his guests. After his hotel career, Glenn worked in the office at Foodland before retiring.
Although he never married, he was the favorite uncle to two nephews, one grandnephew, and several godchildren. He was a regular at Tokyo Tei and Tasty Crust in Wailuku, and Sekiya’s in Kaimuki. He enjoyed traveling across the mainland, going to Disneyland, and especially visiting his dear friends in California, Washington, and Vancouver. He made sure to always bring at least one of his ohana with him on his travels.
He was an audiophile and maintained a wide collection of music from Hawaiian to enka to early rock-and-roll to gospel. He enjoyed cooking, going to the movies, buying gifts, and cheering for Alabama Crimson Tide and the Chicago Bears.
He was opinionated and didn’t suffer fools, but he was funny, extremely generous and extremely loyal to those he loved.
Glenn was preceded in death by his mother Masae Yoshino (2013) and his younger brother Wayne Yoshino (2020). He is survived by his nephews Scott (Renée) Yoshino and Randy Yoshino, grandnephew Jude (Madelyn) Yoshino, and godson Bradley (Iva) Pressley.
Please join us as we gather as one ohana to remember and honor our beloved uncle on December 30, 2024, at 3pm at Nakamura Mortuary on 1218 Lower Main, Wailuku. Aloha attire suggested. Reception to follow.
