Hilarion Casabay Badua also known to many as “Larry” was born to Victorio & Januaria Badua on October 21,1955 at Brgy. 14, San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte Philippines. He was the 6th child of 8 children.
He grew up into a farmer family; he was also a good hollow block maker when not farming. At the age of 19, he met my mother Tessie Galut and they had their first child a year after. They went on to have a total of 4 children, 2 girls and 2 boys.
In July 1985, along with his youngest sister Ligaya, he migrated to United States landed in the Big Island of Hawaii. 2 years later on January 16, 1987, he went back home in the Philippines and married the love of his life, my mother Tessie, where I was the ring bearer, my sister Cherry Ann was one of the flower girls & my sister Vangie was the Maid of Honor.
He worked for Polynesian Orchid from 1985 to 1987. He moved to Maui in 1988 & worked for Cupies as a dishwasher, then worked at HC&S Paia Sugar Mill until they closed in 2000 and moved to HC & S Pu’unene Sugar Factory Mill and retired from there in 2001.
He also worked for a couple years from Kapalua land & Co. Hotel, after the hotel he worked for private construction company then he went back to farming privately. At the later part of his life, he delivers Filipino vegetables to some local stores & vendors.
His favorite hobbies are farming, growing plants and vegetables at home or at his farms. He loves to take his children, nieces & nephews to the beach and pick up seaweed like pokpoklo & limu. Ama was also a great cook; we love his cooking especially his singkotsar & kilawin.
In 2019, his and our lives change forever, his battle with CANCER begun, he was diagnosed of stage 4 lung cancer, lost his left middle and ring finger due to infections. He also had a stroke & lost his ability to walk freely and depend on a wheelchair, walker & cane to move around, needing assistance doing basic activities of daily living. Through it all until the very end, he fought CANCER fiercely, he never showed defeat but only determination to get better. Alongside him fighting his battle with CANCER is our mom giving him all the love, physical and moral support he needed.
