Moser, James Paul's Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Paul Moser, “Jim,” a beloved husband, devoted father, proud grandfather, and respected Olympic weightlifting coach, who passed away on March 29, 2026 at the age of 64.
Jim was the foundation of his family—a man whose love, strength, and dedication shaped the lives of those closest to him. As a husband, he shared a deep and enduring bond with his partner, built on loyalty, love, and unwavering support. As a father, he was a steady presence, offering guidance, wisdom, and encouragement through every stage of life. As a grandfather, he brought joy, laughter, and warmth, creating special moments that will be treasured forever.
Beyond his family, Jim was a pillar in his community, especially through his passion for Olympic weightlifting. As a coach, he did far more than teach technique—he built character, confidence, and discipline in every athlete he worked with. He believed in the potential of every individual and pushed them not just to be stronger in body, but stronger in spirit. His impact reached far beyond the gym, shaping lives and inspiring countless young people to believe in themselves.
Jim had a unique ability to connect with people from all walks of life, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he met. His generosity, wisdom, sense of humor, strength of character and his genuine care for people especially the youth made him not only respected but deeply loved. Whether mentoring an athlete, supporting a friend, or spending time with family, he gave his whole heart. The lives he touched are a testament to the kind of man he was—selfless, dedicated, and deeply compassionate.
A highly accomplished weightlifter and coach, Jim was a teenage national bench press record holder and earned numerous honors, including 1980 Maryland Amateur Athlete of the Year, an Olympic Festival silver medal, and first place with Best Lifter at the 1985 American Championships. He competed internationally as a Pan American Championship finalist and trained at the Olympic Training Center. A Hawaii State Champion and record holder, he was also a member of the York Barbell team and among the last nationally ranked lifters to train there. His impressive strength included a 155 kg snatch and a 197.5 kg clean and jerk at a bodyweight of 100 kg, along with elite training experience alongside Russian and Bulgarian national teams.
Jim leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and service. He is survived by his beloved wife, Debra Lynn Moser; his children, Katerina, Brittany and William; his grandchildren, Kiana-Lei, Traison and Leia; many extended family members; and a wide community of friends, athletes, and families whose lives were forever changed by his guidance and presence.
Though he is no longer with us, Jim’s spirit lives on in every life he touched, every lesson he taught, and every memory shared. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A service to honor and celebrate his life will be held on May 2, 2026 at St.Theresa’s Church in Kihei. Viewing will take place from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, followed by the service at 10:00 AM. A celebration of life will follow at the Kenolio Recreational Center.
