John Gilbert Kuia's Obituary
John Gilbert Kuia born on April 19, 1942, to parents John and Johanna (Kama) Kuia
John passed away on Thursday, September 19th, 2024 at the age of 82. He left the earth peacefully under the care of Islands Hospice Maui. Born and raised in Lahaina Maui, he was the eldest of 7 children. He began work in the cane fields at an early age. A Lahainaluna High School graduate where his nickname was "Spider". John worked at Kaanapali Golf Course until he retired at 65. He then worked part-time as a security guard thereafter. He became involved in the preservation of the Hawaiian Culture and Land. He was an avid paddler for over 50 years. A cultural leader at Kahana Canoe Club and friend to the Lahaina community. John had a lovely singing voice and a smile to light up the room. He played baseball, basketball, golf, enjoyed coloring, playing cards, traveling to Las Vegas, hanging out with his best friends at Lahaina Fish Company, and most of all spending time with his family. He is survived by his 2 sisters, Gwedolyn "Gwenny" Kauhaa Po and Gaylien (Tim) Luft, his daughter, Sanoe, and many of his cousins, nieces, and nephews. He will surely be missed.
A celebration of John's life will be held on Saturday, December 7th,2024 at Hanakao'o Beach Park near the Kahana Canoe Club Hale beginning at 8:30 am.
