Fukushima, Joseph Kiyoshi's Obituary
Joseph “Joe” Fukushima grew up on the island of Kauai. He peacefully passed away surrounded by his family. A former Army Reserve staff sergeant and devoted family man, he had a remarkable gift for landscaping. His special understanding of plants began when he majored in horticulture at the University of Hawaii, Manoa. Able to recall the scientific names of virtually any plant, he became a successful landscape consultant, contractor and plant nursery entrepreneur on the island of Maui. Joseph helped build a beautiful life for his family. His dedication financed the education of his three daughters, and he generously contributed to his grandchildren’s college funds.
Beyond his professional achievements, he embraced life with many talents and passions. A grand champion in Japanese-language karaoke competitions, he found joy in music and performance. He was also an avid fisherman and loved diving, shoreline fishing and boating with family and friends. His exceptional cooking and culinary specialties were enjoyed by many. Joseph also took his family on many memorable trips throughout Asia and the U.S., and particularly loved Japan.
Joseph is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Ruth Fukushima; his daughters Alissa Lone (Robert), Kamla Fukushima (Eric), Tricia Nguyen (Hoang); hanai daughter Crystal Kallik (Peter); grandchildren Kira, Lucas, Sydney, Katie and Sierra; hanai grandchildren Lauren and Frederick and numerous brothers, sister, nieces and nephews.
Above all, Joseph will be remembered for his fun-loving humor, generosity, and integrity. He was dearly loved and will live on in the hearts of all whose lives he touched.
Celebration of Life Services to be held on Saturday, March 8, 2025, at Nakamura Mortuary in Wailuku from 9:30AM, with burial at Maui View Cemetery Mausoleum at 12:30PM.
