Remembering Joe from so long ago. With sincere sympathy to his wife and to his lovely parents and brother whom I remember so very fondly.
Joe Scuro had a passion for justice. He treated everyone fairly.
Joe Scuro was an excellent teacher. I had two classes with him when I was working towards a Bachelor?s degree here on this campus. I absolutely loved when he used his sports analogies to explain law. Even though I didn?t always know the rules of hockey or football, his classes were lively and he provided the guidance and encouragement that made you believe that you had all the tools needed to do whatever you wanted to do. I remember preparing to support the teachers in the strikes that the DOE and UHPA were engaged in. As students we were conflicted with what to do. Cross the picket and jeopardize our relationships with our teachers or don?t cross and jeopardize our ability to graduate that semester. Joe was very clear with his students and provided us alternative ways of dealing with the situation.
I was also fortunate to have Joe as a mentor as I transitioned to grad school. He wrote me a letter of recommendation which resulted in an East West Center Fellowship. He handed me the letter and said, "now don?t make a liar out of me." He thought I should go to law school to "change the world" as I passionately believed I could do. We talked about different schools that would be fitting of my ideology and my family situation. Although I think he was a little disappointed that I didn?t have the self confidence to pursue law school, he never tried to dissuade me from the path I took and encouraged this single mom of three children to have no fear reaching for my goals. I saw him shortly after I started working on campus. Once again, he provided wise advise that I still think of from time to time.
Mahalo Joe for providing engaging and thought provoking lessons in the classroom and for life. You truly were a man of honor and integrity. Both Charles and I will miss you.
To Virginia, it was wonderful to meet you at the service. I was honored to be apart of this last goodbye. So often we loose touch of the people who make a difference in our lives. This was an excellent reminder of why I need to pay more attention to those who impacted my life even if it was just for a moment. May you always be blessed with loving memories during these times.
Aloha no,

Aloha,
Professor Scuro brought the mainland perspective and his heart was good!
He was my Instructor in 2006-2008 here on Maui at the UH-Manoa out-reach Program. Professor Scuro was also wise and humorous and his classes were very challenging and enlightening. I learned much during those class sessions. Mahalo Professor Scuro for providing students with skills and thoughts with the functions of society and how we can better our environment. He also taught me a new meaning of the golden rule; "he who has all the gold, makes all the rules!"
My condolences God bless you!
