Joyce Ige's Obituary
Joyce Fumiko Ige, 92, of Lahaina, passed away peacefully at her residence on June 7, 2026. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., service at 10:00, with a reception to follow on Saturday, July 11, at Lahaina United Methodist Church, 988 Front St. Burial will take place on Monday, July 13, at 10:30 a.m. at Maui Memorial Park, 450 Waiale Rd., Wailuku.
Joyce was born on December 26, 1933, to the late John and Margaret Maruoka, of Kahuku, Oahu. She was the only daughter of the family with three brothers, David, Donald, and Bertram. She graduated from Kahuku High School and received her teaching degree from the University of Hawai`i at Manoa. Joyce began her 30-year teaching career at Pahoa Elementary School on the Big Island. She soon transferred to King Kamehameha III Elementary School, where she taught until her retirement in 1989. Joyce lived in the teachers’ cottage where she met Alyce, whose future husband introduced her to his good friend, Takeo. They “hit it off” and married on July 12, 1958. Together they raised their two children, Van and Diane, in the heart of Lahaina. Following her retirement, she worked part-time as a Japanese translator for TransHawaiian tour company, volunteer tutor for the Lahaina after-school tutoring program, and hula dancer/greeter with the Lahaina-Honolua Senior Citizens Club. Joyce was a longtime member of the Lahaina United Methodist Church where she enjoyed many roles and responsibilities throughout the years including Sunday School teacher, refreshments volunteer, choir member, worship hula dancer, and board member. She also enjoyed reading, playing word games, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Up until her passing, whenever one of her many former students would see her, they would give her a big smile and say “Hi, Mrs. Ige!” That always brought such joy to her, knowing that they recognized and remembered her after so many years and took the time to say hello. Many would also laugh and add that they were naughty back then and her strict teaching style helped them straighten up. She will be fondly remembered for her many contributions to the Lahaina community.
Joyce is survived by her two children: Van (Nanette) Ige, and Diane (Troy) Ige-Pasion; and her four grandchildren: Reilly and Paige Pasion, Grant and Eryne Ige.
Joyce is preceded in death by husband Takeo Ige, and siblings David (Ruth), Donald (Peggy), and Bertram (Jane).
