Katherine Toda's Obituary
Katherine Tomoko Toda, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, friend, and faithful servant, went to be with the Lord on October 3, 2024, at the age of 89, surrounded by her children. She passed away peacefully, strong in her faith and confident of her eternal home in heaven.
Born on March 16, 1935, in Kohala, Hawaii, Katherine, known as “Kathy,” attended Mid Pacific Institute, the University of Hawaii, and graduated from Michigan State University. She moved to Maui in 1970, where she taught at Kahului Elementary School for 25 years and supported her husband, Herbert, at his drugstore until his retirement.
A devoted member of Kahului Union Church, Kathy exemplified the joy, love, and grace of Christ in all she did. She was involved in many community and church activities, from volunteering at the church preschool, to singing in the choir and playing the ukulele at senior centers, to participating in Delta Kappa Gamma sorority projects and much more. Her selfless spirit, kindness, and service to others made a lasting impact on everyone she encountered, and her endless supply of positive energy amazed us all.
Kathy was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert, with whom she shared many wonderful years. She is survived by her children, Jon (Lydia), Dean (Lori), and Sheryl Toda; six grandchildren; and her siblings Rae Watanabe, Harold Sugiyama, Linda Mengel, and David Sugiyama. Her legacy will continue through all who knew and loved her.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at 10 a.m. on January 4, 2025, at Kahului Union Church, with visitation beginning at 9 a.m. Attire: Aloha, colorful.
