In Loving Memory of Kenneth Irving Steffen
March 24, 1942 - May 11, 2025
With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Kenneth Irving Steffen-a devoted father, adored grandfather, beloved uncle, and proud father-in-law-who left us on May 11, 2025, at the age of 83. Ken passed peacefully in Maui, Hawaii, where he had been living for the past several years-a place he loved and called home. A cherished friend and respected businessman, Ken brought light, laughter, and kindness into the lives of all who knew him.
Born on March 24, 1942, in San Francisco, Ken lived a life rooted in integrity, service, and humor. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1959 and went on to attend San Jose State University, where he earned a degree in business. As a young man, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, a reflection of his early leadership, determination, and character. He also proudly served in the Naval Air Reserve, continuing a lifelong commitment to service and community.
Ken moved to Monte Sereno in 1964 and later to Los Gatos in 1977, where he continued to build a life centered around family, hard work, and connection. He began his career in insurance in 1968 with the Klindt Agency. A natural salesman with an entrepreneurial spirit, he purchased the agency in 1983 and went on to form ComPro Insurance Services in 1984-a full-service agency that thrived under his leadership and personal approach to helping others.
In 1991, Ken moved to Marin County, where he embraced a new chapter of life with energy and purpose. He quickly became involved with the Mount Tamalpais Interpretive Association, volunteering his time and leading hikes, sharing his love of nature and community with others.
In 1997, Ken and his son opened California Grill and Rotisserie in Novato, California-a lively, welcoming restaurant that became a hub for good food and even better stories.
Although he came from a broken home, Ken forged his own path with resilience and determination, achieving success both personally and professionally. His dedication, work ethic, and ability to connect with people earned him the respect of many and the friendship of even more.
Ken was known for his sharp wit, generous heart, and a sense of humor that made people laugh-often without him even trying. Whether in business, family, or friendship, he had a gift for making people feel seen and valued.
He is survived by his son, Ken Steffen; Ken's late wife, Margaret Steffen; and their three children, Trevor, Connor, and Lucy, whom Ken adored; his daughter, Molly Steffen, and her wife, Hourig Kizirian; and his former wife, Kitty Steffen, whom he always loved and cared for deeply. He is also lovingly remembered by his brother-in-law, Bill Brenegan; his niece, Jill Brenegan, her husband Doug, and their children, Reed and Hudson.
Ken was funny, caring, and deeply loyal. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
The family is planning small, intimate celebrations to spread his ashes in both Maui and Marin County-two places he held close to his heart. For details, please reach out to Ken or Molly Steffen via email. [email protected] (Maui) [email protected] (Marin County)
