Lea Ann Miyagawa
As one of Lionel's cousins who lives on the Mainland, I didn't see him often. However, when I did, it was like we just picked up where we left off the last time in a very comforting way. I always appreciated that about him.
I feel so grateful that on my last visit to Maui this past April, I visited Lionel while he was having dialysis. We talked stories--he made me laugh and tear up at the same time. He talked about his love for his kids and family and how his grandchildren made him so happy. Even though his body was giving out, he wasn't ready at that moment to let go. He told me he wanted more time with family.
When it was time for me to leave the dialysis place, I gave him a hug. I left him in his recliner eating the snacks he had packed, wearing his blue tinted sunglasses, and adjusting the channel on the TV. As I turned one more time looking over my shoulder at him, he gave me his smile and waved.
I will miss you Lionel, but I get a little smile on my face knowing you are no longer suffering and don't have to go to anymore dialysis appointments!
Love you cuz,
