Lloyd E. Akiona's Obituary
Lloyd Akiona (aka “Mundo/Captain/Unko”) 78 of Lahaina, Maui went home to the Lord on December 22, 2023 while surrounded by his loved ones. He was born January 20, 1945 in Hana, Maui and raised in Wailuanui, Maui until he became a border at Lahainaluna High School in 1960. It is there that he met the love of his life, wife for 59 years, Surficia and became a “Luna for Life”. He began a great life and legacy in Lahaina as a truck mechanic and driver for Maui Pine, auto mechanic at Texaco, and earning extra money as a golf ball range picker at Ka'anapali Golf Course where he found his career with Amfac Inc. Lloyd retired in 2007 as a water source supervisor of Hawaii Water Service based in Ka'anapali. He was known to be a reliable, hard-worker that anyone could count on, made friends easily and turned strangers into “family”. Lloyd was always eager to share is knowledge, love and enthusiasm for hunting, fishing, and automobiles with others, and was always there to help friends, family and the church (Maria Lanakila, Lahaina and Sacred Hearts Mission, Kapalua).
He is now eating Hawaiian food to his heart’s content and having a luau in Heaven with his mother Emily Kalua Wendt, his hanai parents Ellen and Samson Akiona, and other family and friends not seen for a while. Although Lloyd is no longer here, he will live on in the hearts of his surviving family wife Surficia, daughters Lorene and Jennifer, grandchildren Michael-Lloyd and Audrey, sisters Norma Trimming (John) and Karen Nelson (Christopher), brothers Edward Wendt (Mahealani) and Carl Wendt (Donna), and the many many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. We will truly miss his smile and shaka.
A special mass will be held at Sacred Hearts Mission Kapalua at 7AM on Wednesday January 31.
Services will be held at Nakamura Mortuary, Wailuku on Saturday February 3, 2024, with visitation starting at 9AM, luncheon at noon and burial to follow at Maui Memorial Park at 2:00pm.
