Marcelino Fillazar's Obituary
Marcelino Fillazar, 80, better known as Rocky, passed away at Maui Memorial Hospital in Wailuku on September 17, 2023 with family at his bedside. He was born in Pu’unene, Maui on June 5, 1943 to the late Donato Amparo and Primitiva Casing Fillazar.
He is survived by his son Mark (Crisanta Yadao) Fillazar of Kahului, and daughter Sharon (Roy Hanks) Fillazar-Hanks of Nahiku. He is also survived by four grandsons Riley (Healani Fernandez) Polk, Christian Fillazar, Jaisten Fillazar, and Rysen ”Ho’ola’i” Fillazar and three granddaughters Marisa Fillazar, Macy Fillazar, and Joy Fillazar-Hanks. He also has one great grandson Dayne K. Polk.
He is also survived by five brothers (+ = deceased spouses): Euprepes Bill (+Dorothy Cagasan) Pellazar of Paia, Faustino “Foxy” (+Betsy Ho) Pellazar of Mililani, Nathan “Nod” (+Nellie Arzaga) Pellazar of Waikapu, his twin brother Bonifacio “Boni” (Janice Recamara) of Ewa Beach, and Art Fillazar of Kahului, and a sister Ambrosia “Amy” (+Jesus, Sr.) Parilla of Washington. He also is survived by sisters-in-law Gloria (Don) Manzano (+Acacio Edward) and Cheri Pellazar (+Claudio “Claude”) of Pennsylvania. He is also survived by numerous cousins, and nephews and nieces from the second, third and fourth generation in Hawai’i, Washington, Oregon, California, Missouri, Texas, and Pennsylvania.
He was also preceded in death by an older sister Juana “JoAnn” Pellazar Barona (+Rudy Barona), and brothers Claudio “Claude”) Pellazar and Acacio Edward Pellazar, and three infant brothers: Juan Pellazar, Theodorico “Kiko” Pellazar, and Gregorio Pellazar.
Rocky attended Pu’unene School and graduated from Baldwin High School, class of 1962. After high school, he served in the U.S. Army and spent time in Germany and Johnston Island. Upon returning from military service in 1966, he worked in the construction industry on Oahu for several years under the supervision of older brother “Foxy”, with his twin brother Boni (who also returned from an Army tour). Upon his return to Maui, his all-around trade talent led him to Volkswagen of Maui. With the start of the tourist industry and the opening of the Sheraton Maui Hotel, Rocky ended a near 30+ years in their engineering department and retired in 2012. He enjoyed spending time with his friends watching sports and engaging in conversations at the local hangouts. He especially enjoyed his time with his grandchildren. He was known to always having shirts with pockets and wearing one of his novel baseball hats that read: “Lower Main Street Matters” and he was considered the family’s “grill master”. He could also be found hanging out with his retiree friends or on the golf course or at the local sports bars.
Service will be held at Nakamura Mortuary, 1218 Lower Main Street, in Wailuku on Friday, November 17, 2023. Family viewing will commence at 9:00am. Public visitation will be available from 10:00am. There will be a eulogy by his daughter-in-law Crisanta Fillazar and a poem shared by his grandchildren at 11:00am. Refreshments and a light lunch will be available. By 12 noon, all parties will leave Nakamura’s for the Veteran’s Cemetery in Makawao for military services and burial at 1:00pm. Car pooling is recommended for those attending burial. Aloha or casual attire is requested.
