Maria Piskova's Obituary
Maria died at home in her sleep on the morning of June 27th, 2024, after a long battle against complications from a stroke. She was born in Sofia, Bulgaria and spent parts of her childhood in Casablanca, Morrocco and Paris, France. As a child in Casablanca, she liked to walk the street with her big german shepherd named Rex- earning her the nickname "the terror of the city." One of her dreams came true in 1999 when she was accepted into the University of California, Berkeley. She graduated with degrees in Political Science and French. She was a gifted linguist and spoke fluent Bulgarian, French, Russian, Serbian and English. Her passions included swimming, music, dancing, backgammon and watching old black and white movies. But her favorite activity was snorkeling with turtles in Maui and filming them with her camera mask. She and her husband moved to Maui in 2019 so she could be near the water and her turtles. Maria suffered a massive stroke several years ago that put her in a wheelchair. She never let it depress her. She kept up her zeal for going out to the pool or beach to sunbathe, continued to play (and typically win) backgammon, or sometimes just go to the mall and hang out by the wishing well.
She was one of a kind and will be deeply missed and never forgotten. She is survived by her husband of 23 years, Jerry Anderson.
