Mary Ellen “Cookie” Akina, 72, a beloved wife, mother, grandma, sister, aunty, and friend passed away peacefully on August 26, 2024.
Mary Ellen Akina was born in Wailuku to parents, Rosaline, and Anthony (Tony) Sanches.
Her warm presence and caring nature left an undeniable mark on all who knew her. Mary Ellen always cared for everyone she knew. Her ability to provide comfort and love made her an exceptional caregiver, a role she embraced wholeheartedly. Mary Ellen’s love for her family was unparalleled, and she often expressed this through the time she spent with them, the care she provided, and the joy she found in life's simple pleasures. She devoted herself to being the best wife, mother, and grandma possible.
Mary Ellen Akina’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew her, but her spirit will continue to inspire and guide us. Her laughter, her love for her family, and her ability to make everyone feel cherished will be sorely missed but never forgotten.
Mary Ellen Akina is survived by her sons, Tony (Sherron) Akina and Timothy (Ravan) Akina Jr; daughter, Judee Mae (Samuel Jr.) Aki; brothers, Gary (Peggy) Sanches, Ronald (Carolyn) Sanches; grandchildren, Kawiki (Shayleen Harrison) Akina, Hanalei Akina, Peighton Akina, Kawehi Akina, Pasha Akina, Samuel “Kamuela” Aki III; great grandchildren Kawailani Akina, and Kalena Dawn Akina.
She is predeceased by her loving husband Timothy Akina Sr. mother, Rosaline Sanches father, Anthony (Tony) Sanches, sister Judith Sanches, brother Alan Sanches and grandchildren, Aulii Suggs-Akina and Tony Akina Jr.
Services honoring Mary Ellen “Cookie” Akina will be held at St Joseph Church in Makawao on Friday, September 20, 2024, with visitation at 9:30am; mass will be celebrated at 11:00am followed by burial at the Maui Veteran’s Cemetery in Makawao at 1:00pm.
