Masao "Masa" Motooka's Obituary
Masao “Masa” Motooka reached his goal of celebrating his 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends at Hale Makua, where he spent the last 1½ years of his life. Just a few weeks later, on July 19, 2025, he passed peacefully, closing a chapter of a life well-lived.
Masa’s secret to a long and happy life was simple: drink plenty of beer, enjoy ice cream often, and keep lots of Ricola nearby while cheering on UH sports. Born and raised in beautiful (“Heavenly”) Hana, Maui, he always believed his hometown was a big reason for his joy and longevity. He attended Hana School, Mid-Pacific High School, and graduated from Maui High (Hamakuapoko).
During World War II, Masa served as an interpreter for the U.S. Army and was later honored with the Congressional Gold Medal for his service as a Nisei veteran. After the war, he returned home and worked in the maintenance department at Hana Ranch and Hotel Hana Maui.
Masa was the eldest child of Yasutaro and Fujiko Motooka. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Violet; daughter, Janice; granddaughter, Cassie Lee; his parents; sisters, Helen Nakashima and Alice Kawaiaea; and brothers, Jiro, Stanley, Richard, Melvin, and Jerry.
He leaves behind a family who will forever cherish his humor, kindness, and quiet strength: his son, Bobby; daughters, Margaret (Jan) Young, Trudy Lee, and AJ (Michael) Quinn; sister, Elaine Ichimura; grandchildren, Brandy, Malia Anne, and Michael Shea; and great-grandchildren, Nainoa and Aviani.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at Nakamura Mortuary. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by services at 10:30 a.m. Burial will take place at 2:00 p.m. at Maui Memorial Park.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Hale Makua in Kahului and Hospice Maui for the kindness and compassion shown to their father. Special thanks also go to Karen Motooka, Kathy Marushige, and Gerald and Helen Ann Mahadocon for their love, care, and support.
