Melanio Sumer Sr.'s Obituary
Melanio Banes Sumer, Sr., 72 passed away peacefully on March 6, 2021 at his home. He was born on April 21, 1948 in Gonzaga, Philippines and came to Hawai`i in 1976 where he began his career working in the sugar plantation.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Evelyn Sumer. Sons Randy Sumer (Misty Watanabe), Melanio (Katelyn) Sumer, Jr. and Melvyn (Ellen) Sumer. Siblings Emerson (Evelyn) Sumer and Milagros (Vincent) Del Castillo. Grandchildren Justin, Jalyssa, Jordan, Lexie, Anuhea, Troy, Chloe, and Kainoa.
Melanio was a great, caring and loving person who always put his family first. He had set forward a goal to come to Hawai`i in search of a better life and was able to bring over his family from the Philippines. Working day and night he was able to accomplish that goal. When not working he was a typical waterman. Fishing was his favorite hobby, from nets to rods and spears, he did it all. When fishing was not an option he would be fixing or building things around the house. He was always doing something to provide for his family.
There was never a dull moment with him. He would always share stories and always had an answer for everything. Another thing he loved doing was singing, sometimes making up his own lyrics to the music. He had a great sense of humor, always joking around and laughing. We can go on for days speaking of all the lessons learned and good times we had with him. We are very thankful of where we are today, because of him. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
There will be two days of services held at Nakamura Mortuary in Wailuku. Night Viewing on Tuesday April 6, 2021 from 5:00-6:00pm for family and 6:00-8:00pm open to public. The following day April 7, 2021 from 9:00-10:00am for family and 10:00-11:30am open to public followed by the Burial at Maui Memorial Park, Garden of Meditation at 12:30pm. Please remember to wear your mask and practice social distancing.
