Melvin Jay Fielding's Obituary
Melvin Jay Fielding, 83, of Haiku, Maui passed on March 1, 2021 at home of cancer. Melvin was born in San Diego, California on July 12, 1937 and grew up on South Mission Beach. He was in the ocean every chance he had, surfing and diving for fish and abalone. He attended La Jolla High School and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, earning a Bachelor of Architecture in 1964. He proudly served in the Marine Corps and trained at Camp Pendleton. Melvin moved with his young family to Oahu in 1967 and worked for several architectural firms before starting his own business as Melvin Jay Fielding Architecture in Honolulu, and on Maui from the 1970s until his death. He sailed his family across Hawaii and the Pacific on the 41’ Alden ketch Vela, navigating by the sun and stars and lived aboard Vela for many years. Melvin lived a full and adventurous life, following his dreams and sharing his many talents and passions. He could design, build, and engineer anything and was a gifted artist in stone, wood, clay, watercolor, drawing and photography. He steadfastly loved his family, and was always generous and willing to lend a hand. Melvin is survived by his former wife Ann Fielding their two children and spouses, Emily Fielding and Scott Fretz of Maui, Hawaii, and Brennan and wife Peta Fielding of Queensland, Australia, grandchildren Olelomoana Fielding-Cockett, Daisy Fielding, Skagen Fielding, and great-grandson Luke Lopez. His parents and younger brothers are pre-deceased, Edgar and Lucy Fielding and Donald Fielding and Thomas Fielding. An in-person celebration of life will be held and ashes will be scattered off Waikiki and Mission Beaches, dates to be determined.
