Mildred "Tilly" Jean Pico Tavares, 91, of Pukalani, passed away at home surrounded by her family on March 23, 2024. Born on March 14, 1933 at Puunene Hospital to Manuel Perreira Pico and Catherine Philomena Pico (Correa). A beloved wife, survived by her husband, Richard Moniz Tavares Sr., of 65 years. A beloved sister, whom all her brothers and sisters are predeceased, Irene Patricia Abreu (Francis), Albert Nelson Pico (Clara), Priscilla Mae Viveiros (Charles), Katherine Marie Maeda (Yoshie), Donald Leroy Pico (Rosie), Manuel Alvin Pico (Sandra). A much-loved mother to Richard Moniz Tavares Jr. (Paula CernaI). A very much-loved grandmother to Preston Tavares, Justin Tavares, Sheldon Silva, Brandon Silva and two great-grandchildren Deegan and Teanie. She also loved her visits by her sister-in-law Harriet (Moniz) Tavares and her goddaughter Alberta (Pico) Vierra. Tilly was very social, and she had many dear friends. She loved going to the Kaunoa senior group in Kula and sometimes joined the Pukalani group. Tilly loved her trips to Vegas where she would sit in the keno lounge for hours on hours at the California Hotel and Casino. She would strike up a conversation with those around her, making quick friends from different places. Tilly loved her coffee and would drink a cup at any time of the day. She enjoyed taking daily drives with her husband Richard and driving to Kanaio was one of her favorites. She loved sitting in the truck, having lunch, looking at the scenery and trying to see if she can spot any goats. She would always keep some leftovers from her lunch, especially french fries, to share with the family’s bully dog Kapena when she got home. Kapena loved grandma and would always fall asleep right next to her arm chair, by her feet as her protector. Much mahalo to nurse Kasey-Lee of Bayada and the whole Bayada team. Also, much mahalo to the Hospice Maui team of Barbara, Lynette, Kathy, Napua and Gloria.
Services will be held at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Paia on Wednesday April 17th, 2024. 9am family and 10am public, mass at 11am. Burial to follow at Veterans Cemetery in Makawao at 1pm.
