Mara Mcsherry
I met Pastora at a grieving group sponsored by Hospice up near the hospital- a while after her beloved Rudy left this world. I could hardly believe what a huge character she was, so engaging, entertaining, and full of mischief! We became fast friends and I always had so much fun with her, never a dull moment! She would often call me up and say "Let's get lost!"
In time I was to find out what a deep, intelligent, highly educated, and highly accomplished woman she was. All while running a household of seven children while she worked. She told me she only worked because she wanted to -for the extra spending money.
I"l never forget the surprising thing she told me when I asked her how she learned to speak such beautiful English. She said, "I hung out with the nuns!"
She had an uncanny ability to be very proper, lady like and perfectly well spoken, while knowing how to bus'up people laughing and sometimes vent her frustrations- all in such a charming way.
I learned so much about plantation life and old Hawaii and I always knew that she was pretty much a relic from the past and that there would never be anyone else like her, ever again.
I cherish our memories and I am so grateful to have spent so much quality time with her. An opportunity of a lifetime!
And I look forward to "getting lost"with her again on the other side.
