I was friends with him in the late 1970s in Louisiana. He was a great musician and a very kind young man. I tried to find him on the internet a few times over these many years...didn't know he'd moved to Hawaii. The world is certainly a little dimmer without him. Condolences to his family and friends.
I knew him in high school in Baton Rouge...we were into the same things but were in different cliques. He was the most talented person I have ever known. Mist people focus on his music but his artistic talents were phenomenal. I hated to lose track of him when I went to grad school in Florida.
I grew up with Rene. He was bright kid, quick learner and did not let a lot of things stand in his way. I remember when the Monkees were on tv, and Rene learned every song. I have wondered about him and just Googled him to see if he was still around. I hope is family is doing well. TY Mark Hubbs
Rene & I were close friends in late 60's, in about 5 different rock bands together. He sang & played great organ, I played bass . We also went on a road trip together with 10 other hippies seeking happiness in 70'. On that trip some of us became Christians, got into different churches & music scenes. I'm sorry I lost track of Rene except through his mom. I found him living in Maui & called & talked a little I 90. Missed our friendship we had. We had some fun & crazy times. I haven't heard his later music, but from all I knew of him, he must have lightened up the music scene on Maui as he did with me in Baton Rouge. I was so sad hearing of his death in12'. I saw on this site just before my wife & I went on a cruise . I tried Kareoke first time on cruise & 1st song I found was the short Vanilla Fudge version of You Keep Me Hanging On. I couldn't pass singing that song which he always sang lead in honor of Rene & Mark Stein of VF who did that great arrangement . Miss you Rene. I met Rene the first night he arrived onMaui. I was performing at the Maui Bluebird in the late 70's when he walked in & asked if he could play. The original tunes he ran through wereimpressive. A unique voice with his signature piano lick and blues/gospelinfluenced technique helped him become a popular music staple on the island.We would perform together periodicallyat clubs & parties.A few years back my band was doing a show at Casanova's in Makawao. Renehad heard the radio ad & showed up withhis keyboard. He joined us on stage &helped propel the music to a higher energy level.
