Richard Moses Sword's Obituary
Richard Moses Sword, PhD, passed away at his Makawao home on Sunday, June 29, 2014, surrounded by his wife and children.
Sword, an internationally known psychologist in private practice on the island of Maui, specialized in post-traumatic stress. His work with veterans of World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan wars caused him to seek an effective treatment for PTSD and spurred him on to co-develop time perspective therapy.
A published author, Sword cowrote "The Time Cure", Wiley, 2012 with his wife, Rosemary, and colleague, Philip Zimbardo, PhD, professor emeritus of Stanford University, as well as psychological journal articles. In recent years, Sword made numerous presentations in both the U.S. and Portugal to professionals and laypeople regarding time perspective therapy.
A memorial service will be held at Nakamura Mortuary, on Sunday, July 6, at 9:30am, and services at 11:00am. The family requests no flowers.
He is survived by his wife, Rosemary Sword; son, Aki; daughter, Ella; stepchildren, Ian Yannell (Liz and Coral), Sean Yannell (Crystel and Olivia), Michael Yannell (Karen) and Sarah Holter, as well as brother, Jay Sword (Caroline) and sister, Martha Brooks (Russell).
