Richard Moniz Tavares Sr's Obituary
Richard M Tavares Sr., born on September 10, 1933, passed away peacefully at home on September 17, 2024, at the age of 91. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and proud U.S. Marine, Richard lived a life filled with love, discipline, and service.
Predeceased by his beloved wife, Mildred Pico Tavares, Richard is survived by his sisters Audrey (Henry) Kissell and Madeline (Raymond) Yamada. He is predeceased by his sister Helen (David) Ventura and brother Clarence “Sonny Vick” (Harriet) Tavares. He is also survived by his son Richard “Ricky-T” (Paula) Tavares Jr., his four grandsons Preston and Justin Tavares, and Brandon and Sheldon Silva, as well as his two great-grandchildren. Richard’s best friend and loyal companion, his dog “Kapena,” was always by his side.
Richard grew up in Keokea and attended Lahainaluna High School, where he played varsity football during his freshman and sophomore years. At the age of 16, Richard joined the U.S. Marine Corps, serving bravely in the Korean War. His dedication to his country and the Marine Corps was a lifelong source of pride.
After his service, Richard worked as a heavy equipment operator with Local 3, retiring after decades of hard work. He also had a passion for fishing, particularly bottom fishing for monster onaga and opakapaka, spending many days out on the water. Richard was also a talented craftsman, known for creating intricate woodwork, including walking sticks, canoes, crosses, and traditional Hawaiian jewelry. His skills and creativity were admired by many.
When he wasn’t crafting or fishing, Richard loved to travel to Las Vegas, where he enjoyed the thrill of hitting jackpots. Despite his many hobbies, his greatest joy came from spending time with his wife, Mildred. The two of them were inseparable, often taking long rides together in their truck. Now, they are reunited in eternal peace, enjoying their time together once again.
A Marine through and through, Richard was a man of strict discipline and directness, instilling those values in the people he loved. His legacy of strength, service, and love for his family will live on forever.
