Robert "Bobby" Nakayama's Obituary
Robert Masakazu Nakayama of Kahului, Maui passed away at Hospice Maui on March 12, 2022 at the age of ninety. Born August 30, 1931 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Yotaro and Tomoe Nakayama, he graduated from Farrington High School in 1950 and enlisted into the U.S. Army in 1951. Injured in the Korean war, he was honorably discharged in 1953.
He entered the Northrop Aeronautical Institute which led him to a lifetime of service as an electrical airplane mechanic in Los Angeles, California, retiring from Boeing. He resided in California until a move to Maui in 1996.
Bobby took frequent trips to Oregon, Tahoe, Northern California and Las Vegas to visit friends and to try his luck on horse racing. When he landed back on Maui, he was already planning for his return trip. His passions included horse racing at Santa Ana Race Track in his younger days, building ships from model kits, listening to his Big Band and Hawaiian music CD collection, and enjoying a meal with friends.
Maui became his home where he made lasting friendships and is his final resting place. He is survived by brother Walter Nakayama and sisters Rose Kurihara, Florence Horinouchi, and Helen Honda; and many nieces and nephews on Oahu and the continental USA.
In lieu of flowers, donations are excepted in his honor at Nisei Veterans Memorial Center where adult day care and a preschool may benefit in his memory.
