Sebastian Saranillas Salcedo's Obituary
Sebastian Salcedo
We lost our dear father and patriarch of our Ohana, Sebastian “Bastian” Saranillas Salcedo of Lahaina, Maui. He passed away on January 14th, 2023, with his loving family around him. He was 94 years old.
Bastian was born in Badoc, Ilocos Norte to Lucio Salcedo and Clara Saranillas on December 19, 1928.
Sebastian was raised as a farmer. As a young man in the Philippines, he enjoyed volleyball, spearfishing, and playing the guitar. He played in the Pagetpet String Band that traveled the barrios. He serenaded our mom and asked her to wait for him upon returning from service in the Philippines military. He was a Corporal in the 2nd Battalion 31st Infantry 11th division as a trained medic. He went to Guam for auto mechanic training. After returning to the Philippines, he married mom. He was assigned to help secure voting ballots in a major Philippine election. In 1966, he boarded the USS Navy Cleveland, a light cruiser set for the Hawaiian Islands to meet his brother, Mariano Salcedo. In 1967 our mom and their 4 young children flew to Maui to join him. They later had 2 more Hawaii-born children. He worked at the Lahaina Pioneer Mill Company as a laborer, tool mechanic, and irrigation supervisor. In his retirement, he worked in the hospitality industry, owned his taxi business, and operated his rental real estate. Our dad was a proud man. He was a happy-go- lucky, simple, humble, and kind man. He was proud of us and made us all feel special.
Sebastian had 4 half siblings, all deceased: Marciana, Gabriel, Calista, and Dino Laforga. He also had 3 full siblings: Marciana (Arce), Mariano, and Magdalena Polintang. He is survived by his wife, Felicidad Yadao Salcedo; his children, Angelita (Rudy) Tabladillo, Marcos (Tonya) Salcedo, Estrella (Roy) Dunn, Clarita (Tim) Salcedo-Obert, Helen (Jareth) Lum Lung and Edna (Freddy) Keahi; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Sheri, Vanessa (Sean), Jr Boy, Brennon, Justyn, Jordan, Jonathan (Jamie), Alex, Erica, Ikaika, Jayda, Nalu, Nohea, Nainoa, Nui, Ashley, Jacob, Joshua, Alyssa, Aleiyna, Dean-dean, Kawhi, Amari, Maia, and Brody.
Dad, you will forever be in our hearts and minds as we proudly carry on our Filipino/Hawaiian/American heritage. We are fortunate and grateful for your courage and determination. We are forever thankful. We love you.
