I was so privileged to get to know Mr. Izumigawa as part of the 100th 'ohana here on Oahu. He was the epitome of what the boys of the Purple Heart Battalion stood for - humble, sincere, caring, and always with a smile on his face and a story to tell. He was a very unique 100th vet though with his beautiful long white hair (a contrast to the shiny "bolo heads" on most of the boys) and his willingness to speak about his World War II experiences to a crowd. He was the "go to" guy whenever a request came for a speaker on Maui and I knew he would leave those fortunate enough to hear him with tears in their eyes and a warm feeling in their hearts. He was truly one who, although soft spoken, left an impression with you with his words and demeanor.
On a trip to Hoover Dam as part of the annual 100th Mini-Reunion to Las Vegas, I got to spend time "talking story" with him as I was seated next to him on the bus. We shared stories about shopping at Ookas, making the most of the local experience at The Cal, little known facts about other 100th veterans as well as our plans for the future when we returned to Hawaii. Being terrified of heights, I was so grateful to have him nearby to talk too and take my mind off of my anxiety.
I know that the paesanos of the 100th who have taken the final journey before Mr. Izumigawa have welcomed him with a glass of wine and some pupus. I can hear them now, "Hey, Surfer Boy! About time you came to the party!"
