Sumiko Nakashima's Obituary
Sumiko Nakashima, 91, of Kahului, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2017 at Roselani Place, surrounded by her loving family.
Services honoring Mrs. Nakashima will be held at Makawao Hongwanji on Sunday, June 4, 2017. Visitation will begin at 3:00pm, with memorial services beginning at 4:00pm.
Sumiko was born on April 21, 1926 in Puunene to Takeo & Kome Tanizaki. After graduating from Maui High School, Sumiko married her love, Mr. Moriaki Nakashima and together they raised two sons. With Moriaki’s help and the dedication and hard work of a handful of young ladies, Sumiko navigated the course of the store and guided with a firm but kind hand, the employees she supervised. Generations passed through those doors, many of them recipients of Sumiko’s generosity and trust during the early plantation days – she set the standard and culture that still exists at the Pukalani Superette. She was the best mom anybody could have had. She was the best mom anybody could have had. She was the best mom anybody could have had.
Mrs. Nakashima was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Mr. Moriaki Nakashima. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, sons, Myles (Margaret) Nakashima and Aric Nakashima; grandchildren, Meghan, Jayson, Michelle and Matthew.
