Thelma Okuda's Obituary
Thelma Tokue Okuda passed away peacefully on June 21, 2026, at Maui Memorial Medical
Center. She was born on September 11, 1927, in Kahului, Maui, to Masaichi and Nui
(Wakamiya) Wakayama. Thelma retired as a forelady at Maui Land and Pine Co.
Thelma enjoyed singing, playing Hanafuda card games, and loved traveling with her husband
Michio. More than anything, she lived for her husband and family. She was always there for
them, putting their happiness above her own and cherishing every moment together. Her life
was truly defined by the love and joy she shared with the people she held closest.
Thelma is survived by her sons, Alan (Faith) Okuda and Brian (Colleen) Okuda; her son-in-law,
Jay Viela; her grandchildren, Kiera Viela (and fiancé Nevan Watanabe), Kalena Viela (and
partner Elijah Moritz), and Makenna Okuda; and her great-grandchildren, Ezra Michio
Okuda-Dinson, and Braylynn Watanabe. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband,
Michio Okuda, and her daughter, Lynn Viela.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, August 14, 2026, at Nakamura Mortuary. Visitation
will be from 5:00 to 5:30 pm, followed by a public service at 5:30 pm. Dinner to follow.
Cremation and a private burial will take place at later dates.
