Thelma Garcia Van Hoosier's Obituary
Thelma Garcia Van Hoosier, 61, of Lahaina, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 11, 2016 in Kahului, surrounded by her loving family. Services honoring Mrs. Van Hoosier will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at Nakamura Mortuary, 1218 Lower Main Street, Wailuku, HI 96763, (808) 495-4308, with Pastor Kawika Kiesling of Kumulani Chapel officiating. Visitation will begin at 4:00pm, with services beginning at 5:00pm.
Born May 5, 1955, in Manila, Philippines, to Isagani Cubarrubias Garcia and Raquel Asuncion Garcia, she attended university at the Mapua Institute of Technology in Manila earning her bachelor of science degree with highest honors in chemistry, then moved to the United States in 1976. She later settled in Illinois and began work as a chemist for Fuji Photographic Film. While raising her family, she attended Devry University graduating magna cum laude with a master’s of science degree in computer information systems engineering. She worked for American Airlines and served in real estate as a licensed agent in both Illinois and Florida. In 2010, Thelma moved to Maui and enjoyed fulfilling her passion for travel. She always loved spending time with her children, visiting her family in the Philippines all while traveling abroad to experience new places and culture. Thelma was known to be a very intelligent, strong, dedicated and independent woman, but she will be remembered as a free and giving spirit, with a smile and vibrant personality that could light up any room.
Thelma is survived by her daughter, Karen Van Hoosier; son, Ken Van Hoosier; father of Karen & Ken, Keith Van Hoosier; parents, Isagani & Raquel Garcia; brothers, Napoleon & Ferdinand Garcia; and her beloved companion of many years, Tony Abut.
