Umeko was born on December 30, 1916 in Wailuku, to Shigeru & Motoe Murakami. She was the 2nd eldest of 10 children. She met and married her love, Shigeru Oura, and together they raised five children. She worked in the canning department at Maui Land and Pineapple Company. Umeko valued family more than anything and enjoyed working with her plants, sewing and baking for her family. Her specialty was lemon meringue pie with a secret crust. She will be remembered as a humble, gentle and kind woman with a great sense of humor who always had a smile on her face.
Umeko was predeceased by her beloved husband, Shigeru Oura; parents, Motoe (Mabe) & Shigeru Murakami; sister, Ann Nishimura; brothers, John, Toshio, James and Keigo Murakami; daughters–in-law, Sandra Oura and Gail Oura; son-in-law, Bruce Peterson and grandson, Dean Oura.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory, sons, Donald (Gail), Glenn (Anne Oishi), Ivan and Dennis (Lana) Oura; daughter, Jane Peterson; sisters, Hazel Nitta and Myrtle Tajiri; brothers, Ralph and Patrick Murakami; sisters-in-law, Jean Murakami & Betty Oura; 8 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The Oura family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the Wailuku Hale Makua Staff and nurses - especially those in the Molokai Wing - for their loving care and support during her stay there.
