Wayne "Muts" Tanaka's Obituary
As the sun set over the Kahului house on Thursday, October 30, 2014, Wayne "Muts" Tanaka took his last breath, surrounded by family. Born on December 27, 1930, he was 83 years young. A light rain started almost immediately after his passing as if angels were also mourning the loss of Wayne from the mortal world.
Wayne gave 44 years to the newspaper, Maui News, as the Sports Editor, writer and photographer; 55 years as a husband and father. He was often referred to as "my favorite person" by some, a hero to his children, and the love of "Mom's" life.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Helen (Goshi) Tanaka; sons, Craig (Karen) and Kevin (Denise); daughter, Gail (Kaipo Williams); and grandchildren Jared Williams, Reese and Devin; step-grandchildren, Krystal (Chad) Loui, Hoku Texeira, Mahea (Matthew) Recupuerto, and Alena (Duane) Gomes; and 9 step-great-grandchildren.
Visitation begins at 3:45pm on Saturday, November 15 at Wailuku Hongwanji Mission with services at 5:00pm and followed by video remembrance in the dining hall.
